Lesson 3: Grammar

In this video lecture, we'll discuss the most important grammar that appears in Chapter 1.

You'll learn about:

  • The verb ser (to be) and how it works
  • The personal pronouns in Spanish (I, you, he, she, etc.)
  • The Spanish articles: el, la, los and las
  • How to form plural nouns
  • The demonstrative forms: este, estos, esta and estas

Once you've watched the video, you can practice the grammar you've learned in each chapter in the quiz below.

Reminder About The Practice Activity

If you didn't get a chance to watch my video in the Vocabulary lesson, please take a moment to watch it here. I want to share my insight on how to approach these quizzes, which are included in every Vocabulary and Grammar lesson. To get the most out of them, it's important to understand why we include them and how you can benefit from them.

In my short video, I lay it all out for you, and offer insight on how your approach to this practice can maximize your learning over the entire course.

You'll see this video in other chapters of the course, too, as a reminder.

Activity - Practice Time!

Now it's time to practise the vocabulary you've learned in this lesson. Use the learning exercises below to familiarise yourself further with the new vocabulary.

Our quiz widget allows you to do a few different types of activities. To make sure this exercise is set up correctly for you in the course, double-check that the box in the lower right corner of the exercise widget is set to "match". If it is not, click on the box and select "match" before you begin.

[If you do not see the box, click on the Cookies request (accept, decline or click on the x). Then you should see the box.]

In order to make the most out of your practice, we recommend doing the activities in the following order.

1) MATCH – Start by playing with the words and phrases to familiarise yourself with them.

2) TEST – Based on what you understood from the video lesson, try to choose the right answer in each of the 10 questions given. Don't worry, it is totally normal to get wrong answers. It is part of the learning process, and the point here is to learn from your mistakes!

3) SPELL – Train your ear to new Spanish vocabulary and practice your typing and spelling. To hear the prompt in the target language, you may have to change the settings. To do this, click on "Options" and then use the "Answer With" drop down box to select your target language. Click the 'x' in the upper right corner to return to the quiz. Then click the speaker, listen to the word prompt, and type what you hear it in the space provided.

4) FLASHCARDS – To wrap up, practice the new vocabulary again using the flashcards. Be sure to practice saying them out loud! If you'd like to hear the words spoken, you can click on "Options" in the lower left corner of the game, click Audio "On". Be sure to set it on the practice language by clicking, also in "Options", on the dropdown box under "Answer With" and selecting the target language. Then click the "x" to take you back to the game.

(Remember, you can change the activity type any time, using the dropdown box in the bottom right-hand corner of the quiz widget).
