30-DAY STORYLEARNING® CHALLENGE

Confident Keigo

Worried you'll offend people when you speak Japanese? It's time to put an end to that! Take our fluency-boosting July challenge and master keigo once and for all, so you can speak with confidence and avoid offending your Japanese friends and colleagues!

Start Date: 1 July

In Japan, politeness matters.

And I’m not just talking about showing good manners...

There’s a complete set of rules - keigo - that determine how you should speak to people:
-You’ll need to use different language depending on:
  • Who you are talking to
  • Who you are talking about
  • The relationship between you and the person you’re talking to

It’s a LOT to remember!

But “putting it off” until you’re more advanced in Japanese definitely isn’t an option, because keigo is everywhere:

  • Common greetings like Ohayou gozaimasu (おはようございます)
  • Everyday interactions in restaurants and shops
  • ... and even in food vocabulary like O sushi (お寿司) and Omizu (お水)!

If you want to learn to speak Japanese respectfully, and make a good impression on the people you meet, then you gotta learn keigo!

But fear not…

Keigo doesn’t have to be scary.

In fact, it can be downright simple with the right approach.

And that’s why I’ve created this unique 30-Day Challenge - “Confident Keigo”.

This challenge will help you master Japanese keigo in just 30 days, so you can express yourself confidently in Japanese like the polite and respectful person you are.

By the end of this challenge, you’ll know exactly when you need to use keigo and how to use it correctly, so you can avoid any social faux pas and enjoy speaking Japanese - no matter who you’re talking to!

Introducing the July Challenge:

"Confident Keigo"

With...

Here’s how the challenge works.

The challenge is based on an exciting original story in Japanese that develops over the 30 days of the challenge.

This is a brand new story, written exclusively for this 30-Day Challenge.

And it's jam-packed with hundreds of examples of different Japanese keigo in real context.

But it's not just the story...

Every day, you’ll receive one new chapter of the story, along with an insightful video lesson and simple exercises to help you understand the keigo that you find in the story.

It'll take you about 15 minutes each day.

All you have to do is show up every day…

Over the course of the month, the daily immersion will help you absorb this tricky aspect of Japanese grammar naturally, until keigo just “sounds right” to you.

You’ll be able to speak Japanese more confidently and without fear of embarrassing social mistakes, because the keigo you need will already be where you need it- on the tip of your tongue!

Master Keigo In The Next 30 Days!

The concept is beautifully simple!

Every day, for 30 days, you’ll get:

  • One 250-word chapter of our Japanese story (jam-packed with Japanese keigo examples)
  • The written story plus audio book (so you can read or listen...wherever you are!)
  • A short 5-minute video lesson with our instructor, Nick. (He’ll explain the keigo in the story)
  • A short daily practice exercise (to help you remember what you’ve learned)
  • Discussion with dozens of fellow challengers in our interactive Facebook group (so you can discuss the story and get answers to questions).

We’ve carefully structured the entire 30 days, so all you have to do is turn up and get stuck in!

Frequently Asked Questions

What level is the challenge for?
Both the story and the lesson content is aimed at students with an N4 level of grammar and vocabulary and an N5 level knowledge of kanji. (That's high-beginner to low-intermediate). In other words, this is for you if you've been studying Japanese for a little while (or maybe a long while!) and can understand at least some Japanese, but struggle to express yourself in a comfortable and natural way.
I'm already using another course/app. I don't have time for this.
This challenge is a great complement to other Japanese courses or apps you might be learning with. The reason is that most language courses focus on teaching you the language broadly... and that's great - you need those broad brushstrokes in order to understand how the language works. But in this challenge, you'll focus intently on a single topic - Japanese keigo - for 30 days. It's the perfect way of honing in on an essential aspect of the Japanese language that is probably only covered briefly in your other courses and apps... and mastering it once and for all. This is totally doable because your daily commitment with this challenge is only 15 minutes. So it's pretty manageable amount of time to devote to your Japanese, even if you're currently using another course or app as well. The challenge is also extremely flexible. We've designed each lesson to be easy to consume on the go, whenever you have a few free minutes, so you can fit it in comfortably: • before breakfast • during your lunch break • after dinner • ...even while waiting for the bus!
Does the story in this challenge come with furigana? Is there romaji?
You'll receive two versions of the Japanese story. One is written in full Japanese script with furigana above the kanji. The second is written in full Japanese, without furigana.
How can I access the challenge?
Mobile, desktop, laptop, tablet... The challenge is super user-friendly and you'll be able to log on from anywhere!
What exactly will I learn? How will this challenge help me?
During this challenge, we'll focus on Japanese keigo, recycled over and over throughout the story. You'll see these different keigo forms used in various contexts over and over in the story. This means you'll master the different keigo forms to the point where they're effortless and automatic, and you instinctively know when and how to use each one.
What if it's too hard, or my level is too low?
To make the challenge achievable, we've kept each chapter short - only 250 words! This means that you'll be able to easily make it to the end of the chapter each day, even if it does take you a little longer. However, the daily video lessons will give you all the support you need, as you'll have clear, professional explanations for how keigo is used in the story. This means that, even if you're really unsure about keigo right now, just by watching and studying the daily videos, you'll learn to think about it like a native speaker by the end of the challenge. If I had my way, this is the only way students would ever learn Japanese!
What's so special about this "story" method anyway?
Most Japanese students try to learn keigo through rules and rote memorisation. This doesn't work, and is extremely stressful for you as a learner. Why? Because there are lots of so-called "rules" to learn and it's impossible to hold them all in your head at the same time while you're speaking. It's also not a natural approach ... native speakers don't learn the language with rules and memory tricks, after all! With the "Confident Keigo" challenge, you'll learn through example and context, just like native speakers do! The magic of learning through story is that your main focus is actually not on the memorising anything... you concentrate on understanding and enjoying the story! As you're reading and listening to the story, keigo will begin to lodge itself subconsciously in your brain. It doesn't happen right away - in fact it may take a couple of weeks for you to feel the real effects. But by the end of the 30 days, you'll have a native-like command of these Japanese keigo that will amaze you.
I'm not sure I can commit for 30 days.
Your daily commitment is only 15 minutes. This is because the principle of the challenge is that "little and often is the best way to learn". 15 minutes is a pretty manageable amount of time to devote to your Japanese. You can fit it in comfortably: • before breakfast • during your lunch break • after dinner • ...even while waiting for the bus! The power is in the consistency - working at it for a short time every day. You'll be amazed at the huge progress you make from simply showing up every day to work on one area of your Japanese! Remember, you get the audio of the story, as well as the text, so you can easily take part and keep up wherever you happen to be!
What if I am unhappy with the challenge?
I would never want you to be unhappy! If you are unsatisfied with the challenge, contact me at any point during the challenge and I'll issue you full and prompt refund.
How long do I have access to the course after the end of the challenge?
How does lifetime access sound? After enrolling, you have unlimited access to this course for as long as you like - across any and all devices you own.
