Kanji Made Easy

Take our Kanji-killing April challenge and discover a fun, fascinating and stress-free system secret for mastering Japanese kanji naturally!

Start Date: 1 April

Level: N4 (Upper Beginner / Lower Intermediate)

Kanji will either make or break your Japanese dreams...

They are what separate the future sensei from the eternal novice...

And it’s easy to understand why...

Kanji are damn hard:

  • There are thousands to learn
  • They’re horrifyingly hard to remember
  • They leave you feeling completely overwhelmed and unsure where to even start

It's easy to feel like you'll never be able to learn the kanji you need to become a master of the Japanese language. It's just one of those things you'll have to live with, right?

Not so fast...

Kanji don’t have to be intimidating.

In fact, they can be incredibly interesting and… (shock horror) even fun!

What if I told you there was a logical, systematic way to learn Kanji that doesn’t rely on flashcards or rote memorisation?

An approach that centres around understanding how kanji work and learning them naturally through story instead of just trying to cram them all into your brain.

That’s what’s on offer in this month’s 30-Day Challenge: Kanji Made Easy.

In this challenge, you’ll master the fundamentals of Japanese kanji and learn dozens of new characters, so you can read with confidence and advance past the beginner level in Japanese.

No more scary, overwhelming lists of characters.

No more boring, out of context flashcards.

And most importantly, no more long wasted hours draining the hope from your Japanese dreams.

Introducing the April Challenge:

"Kanji Made Easy"

Here’s how the challenge works.

The challenge is based on an exciting original story in Japanese that develops over the 30 days of the challenge.

This is a brand new story, written exclusively for this 30-Day Challenge.

We’ve created the story to be jam-packed with examples essential N4 and N5 level kanji in context.

Every day, you’ll receive one new chapter of the story, along with a short video lesson and simple exercises to help you understand how kanji works.

It'll take you about 15 minutes each day.

All you have to do is show up every day…

Over the course of the month, the daily immersion will help you demystify Japanese kanji.

By the end of the challenge you'll have:

  1. Mastered the radicals that are the building blocks of kanji
  2. Learned to easily distinguish onyomi (Chinese readings) and kunyomi (Japanese readings)
  3. Internalised countless new complex kanji!

The result is that you'll be able to read and understand Japanese with greater confidence AND you'll have the framework you need to expand your knowledge of kanji even further.

Here's What's Included...

The concept is beautifully simple!

Every day, for 30 days, you’ll get:

  • One 250-word chapter of our Japanese story (jam-packed with examples of essential Japanese kanji in context)
  • The written story plus audio book (so you can read or listen...wherever you are!)
  • A short 5-minute video lesson with our instructor, Nick. (He'll explain the kanji used in the story)
  • A short daily practice exercise (to help you remember what you’ve learned)
  • Discussion with dozens of fellow challengers in our interactive Facebook group (so you can discuss the story and get answers to questions).

We’ve carefully structured the entire 30 days, so all you have to do is turn up and get stuck in!

Frequently Asked Questions

What level is the challenge for?
Both the story and the lesson content is aimed at students with an N4 level of grammar and vocabulary and an N5 level knowledge of kanji. (That's high-beginner to low-intermediate). In other words, this is for you if you've been studying Japanese for a little while (or maybe a long while!) and can understand at least some Japanese, but struggle to express yourself in a comfortable and natural way. Please note, that this challenge requires a knowledge of hiragana. If you don't feel confident reading hiragana yet, this challenge is not for you.
How can I access the challenge?
Mobile, desktop, laptop, tablet... The challenge is super user-friendly and you'll be able to log on from anywhere!
What exactly will I learn? How will this challenge help me?
During this challenge, we'll focus on Japanese kanji. You'll see the well over 100 N4 and N5 level kanju used in contexts throughout the story. In his lessons, Nick will demystify how kanji works and provide you with a simple framework for learning and understanding the kanji in the story. This means you'll learn how Japanese kanji work to the point where learning them is effortless and fun instead of endlessly frustrating.
What if it's too hard, or my level is too low?
To make the challenge achievable, we've kept each chapter short - only 250 words! This means that you'll be able to easily make it to the end of the chapter each day, even if it does take you a little longer. However, the daily video lessons will give you all the support you need, as you'll have clear, professional explanations for how kanji are used in the story. This means that, even if you're really unsure about the Japanese kanji right now, just by watching and studying the daily videos, you'll learn to think about them like a native speaker by the end of the challenge. If I had my way, this is the only way students would ever learn Japanese kanji!
What's so special about this "StoryLearning" method anyway?
Most Japanese students try to learn kanji with flashcards. This is ineffective, out of context and extremely stressful for you as a learner. Why? Because there are lots kanji to learn and it's impossible to memorise them all one by one. It's also not a natural approach ... native speakers don't learn kanji with flashcards, after all! With the "Kanji Made Easy" challenge, you'll learn through example and context, just like native speakers do! The magic of learning through story is that your main focus is actually not on the kanji... you concentrate on understanding and enjoying the story! As you're reading and listening to the story, the kanji will begin to lodge themselves subconsciously in your brain. It doesn't happen right away - in fact it may take a couple of weeks for you to feel the real effects. But by the end of the 30 days, you'll have an intuitive understanding of Japanese kanji that will amaze you.
I'm not sure I can commit for 30 days
Your daily commitment is only 15 minutes. This is because the principle of the challenge is that "little and often is the best way to learn". 15 minutes is a pretty manageable amount of time to devote to your Japanese. You can fit it in comfortably: • before breakfast • during your lunch break • after dinner • ...even while waiting for the bus! The power is in the consistency - working at it for a short time every day. You'll be amazed at the huge progress you make from simply showing up every day to work on one area of your Japanese! Remember, you get the audio of the story, as well as the text, so you can easily take part and keep up wherever you happen to be!
What if I am unhappy with the challenge?
I would never want you to be unhappy! If you are unsatisfied with the challenge, contact me at any point during the challenge and I'll issue you a full and prompt refund.
How long do I have access to the course after the end of the challenge?
How does lifetime access sound? After enrolling, you have unlimited access to this course for as long as you like - across any and all devices you own.
Does the story in this challenge come with furigana? Is there romaji?
You'll receive two versions of the Japanese story. One is written in full Japanese script with furigana above the kanji. The second is written in full Japanese, without furigana.
